Jewellery care

How to look after your jewellery

Every jewellery piece requires special care to preserve its appearance and longevity.

Sterling silver jewellery

Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to salty air, chlorine, sulphur, humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, household bleach and other strong chemicals. To prevent tarnish as much as possible, we recommend that you remove your jewellery when showering, bathing or swimming in pools or sea or when undertaking any manual or domestic work.

Avoid contact with chemicals, perfume, hairspray and deodorant.

It is also recommended to remove your jewellery before bed as it causes damage, especially to the earrings.

To bring back sparkle use warm water, washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Soak and brush inside and out and rinse.

Plated jewellery (gold, silver, rhodium etc.)

When it comes to keeping your silver, gold plated jewellery looking its best, there are some simple but important steps you can take to extend its lifespan. While some of our jewellery might be waterproof, it’s not a guarantee for life, and taking care of your pieces will ensure they stay beautiful for years to come. Here's how to keep your favourite pieces sparkling and vibrant!

Keep It Dry

First and foremost, avoid wearing plated jewellery in the shower or while swimming. Moisture, especially from water and sweat, can wear away the plating over time. It's always best to remove your jewellery before taking a dip or hopping in the shower.

Avoid Chemicals

Chlorine, bleach, and other harsh chemicals can damage plated jewellery. Take off your jewellery before using cleaning products or swimming in a chlorinated pool. These chemicals can lead to discolouration and weaken the plating.

Gentle Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your plated jewellery, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away any dirt or oils. For more thorough cleaning, dampen the cloth with a little warm water and mild soap. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, as they can scratch and damage the plating.

Store Properly

Store your plated jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. A jewellery box with separate compartments or a soft pouch is ideal for keeping pieces from scratching each other. Keeping your jewellery airtight can also help prevent tarnishing.

Handle with Care

When putting on or taking off your plated jewellery, handle it gently. Avoid pulling, tugging, or bending, as this can cause stress on the plating and potentially damage it.

Give It a Break

Try not to wear the same piece of jewellery every day. Give it a rest to prevent the plating from wearing out too quickly. Alternating your pieces will not only extend their life but also give you the opportunity to change up your look.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your silver and gold plated jewellery  looking as beautiful as the day you got it. Proper care can make all the difference in preserving its sparkle and sheen!
